Development & Evolution

Jet was the first car built by Cullimore Racing and was all about development and the learning process.

Over the course of 8 months during my final year of school, the design was repeatedly refined and then built in 6 weeks during the summer break.

After winning the National Final at its first attempt, over the next 4 seasons Jet set numerous records. Including a record span of 17 consecutive race wins across 3 seasons.

Jet first raced at the end of the 2012 season and won the F24+ National final at its first attempt.

The following year continued where 2012 left off winning a number of races during 2013 including the F24+ National Final and the F24+ Championship.

Having won every it entered in 2014, Jet went on to break a record by winning the now F24+ International Final for a third time in a row and successfully defending the F24+ Championship.

Jet was retired after the introduction of Jet II.

Practical Skills

Construction

Built from modest materials, Jet is a plywood monocoque. Plywood was chosen as it is a cheap, readily available and easily workable material that I was already comfortable using. This allowed me to focus my attention on design and performance elements.

Throughout the seasons, Jet was continuously developed and upgraded with replacement parts. Upgrades ranging from 3 steering assembly revisions to modifications to the cooling strategy.

A development was the carbon fibre top in 2014. While this reduced weight and the number of split lines, it provided the ideal exercise to learn composite manufacturing techniques. This knowledge was used as the basis of Jet II’s construction.
